Local Business Spotlight - Colleton Coffee

Posted

This month’s business spotlight is on Colleton Coffee. Colleton Coffee is located on Washington Street and is co-owned by Jesse and Mandy Burdick.

The Burdick sisters own two business in Walterboro, both on Washington Street. Twig and Colleton Coffee. Originally from Florida they moved to Walterboro when their father came to work in Colleton County.

They bought Twig when the original owner was ready to sell the business around 2018, and Colleton Coffee was opened last year after searching for a location. Mandy explains, “We had Twig pretty well handled between the two of us and felt like we could do something else. Since the old Christmas bank lunch spot closed, we said Main Street really needed a coffee shop. We spent a lot of time thinking and praying about it.” After finding no buildings available they heard random comment about the old Shoeland Building becoming available and took a look at the space. Mandy adds, “We felt, that would be an ideal location, not to mention a perfect building that had already been renovated. It’s a beautiful, beautiful building.” Some of the features of the shop are the original exposed brick walls and a centerpiece skylight that was covered over and forgotten for years. As a nod to its former use the Shoeland name is still on the storefront and as an added touch there are even shoes along the windowsills.

Jessie describes the coffee, “It is American coffee, grown in South America, we go through different types based on availability, right now we have a Guatemalan blend. It’s delicious coffee. We have a standard that we’d like to meet so it has to meet all the qualifications. We do a lot of testing.”

In addition to hot coffee they have specialty drinks as well, Jessie adds, “We have really delicious, good quality, cold/icy drinks that are very popular with summer months. Surprisingly, we sold a bunch of them over the winter months. Also, people love a mocha latte, and we make other drinks, such as a sparkling tea that is carbonated and it comes in a peach raspberry.

Mango is our newest flavor and it’s delicious. We have alternatives in case you’re not a huge coffee drinker.”

While you drink your coffee, a snack might be in order. Colleton Coffee has delicious treats such as blueberry scones, sugar cookies and assorted other snacks.

Colleton Coffee had a nice assortment of gifts as well. They have books for children and an outstanding assortment of Bibles. Jessie describes the collection, “We have project books for craft and self-help and motivational books. We really tried to bring in great books and are very picky about the books we choose. So hopefully they will inspire and encourage, and if you have small children, you don’t have to be nervous about what kind of books you might pick up off the shelf.”

The shop also has a nice selection of toys made in the United States by Green Toys.

Colleton Coffee also has games available to play as you enjoy your coffee and even present a monthly family game night, usually the third Friday of the month, where they bring out a whole variety of board games, card games and puzzles. They invite people to come in grab game, a table, meet up, and make new friends to just enjoy each other and build community.

Business is good Mandy says, “We do get people off the interstate from literally all over. We had folks in here from Romania the other day so I’m from Germany, we get a fascinating variety of people. We also have our local customers that really appreciate them as we would not be here without them.”

Mandy adds, “The biggest most important factor in both of our businesses at any time is God. It was literally divine help. The details for our businesses fell into place. It was just nothing and then all of a sudden, all the pieces fell into place and it literally had to be God because there’s no way all of that should have worked out that well that quickly. He has been a major guiding force in our lives and our businesses.
