In His Name-Colleton makes an impact in the community

Posted

In His Name - Colleton exists to support our community by offering physical and spiritual support through providing basic needs, supportive programs, resources, and pastoral services for families and individuals residing in Colleton County. Our impact from January to April has us on track to triple our impact from 2023.

Our community outreach office is located at 214 Wichman Street in downtown Walterboro. During the first four months of 2024, we were able to assist 237 clients, 42 being homeless. We served 1,840 meals to the hungry and gave out 1,800 pounds of food from our emergency food pantry.

In His Name-Colleton is not an overnight emergency homeless shelter. In December 2022, we started our transitional housing program. We started with a men’s house in December 2022 and added a women’s house in February 2024. We can now house up to 10 men and 4 women who may have been experiencing homelessness or in need of a program for addiction recovery that meet the requirements. The difference between a homeless shelter and transitional housing is a homeless shelter provides temporary overnight shelter and transitional housing provides much longer term housing option while seeking permanent housing. In His Name-Colleton’s Transitional Housing Program exists to provide a safe environment in addition to the spiritual and educational tools necessary for a long-term recovery from homelessness and/or from the illness of addiction. Our program helps reconnect residents in society by being active, productive members of the community while in our program.

In April, in addition to our community outreach and transitional housing program, we launched our social enterprises by taking over a thrift store (In His Name Community Thrift Store) and starting a landscaping business (In His Name Landscaping). Both of these businesses will be a part of our workforce redevelopment program for guests in our transitional housing program. The purpose of the Workforce Redevelopment Program (WRP) is to better assist each resident in the search for meaningful employment. These job opportunities will help to alleviate the unattractive gap that guests in our program incur from the start of our program while seeking employment in the community. This process will also provide guests with recommendation letters from their immediate supervisors that can be utilized in their next employment opportunity.

We are excited for what God has in store for In His Name and our community! We strive to meet our clients and guests where they are so we can better understand their needs to help navigate through what may be an uncertain time in their life.
