In this weeks series on hurricane preparedness the topic is the difference between watches and warnings.

Hurricane watches are issued 48 hours in advanced of anticipated onset. Under a watch storm surge danger is possible. Tropical storm conditions are also possible as well as hurricane conditions are possible. When a hurricane watch is issued prepare your home and look over your evacuation plan in case a warning is issued. Also pay close attention to instructions from local officials.

In contrast, hurricane warnings are issued 36 hours in advance of predicted arrival. Storm surge danger is expected as well as hurricane conditions. Upon the issue of a hurricane warning, complete storm preparation and evacuate if directed by officials. Make sure you have a plan regarding where you will stay if you evacuate. Extreme sustained winds of a major hurricane (115 mph or more) are expected to start within an hour. In this case take shelter immediately take shelter in the interior of a strongly built structure.
