Barry McRoy Fire Chief Colleton County Fire-Rescue

Posted

Fire Chief Barry McRoy has been on the front line of helping Colleton County residents in their most urgent times of need for many years. He’s been the Colleton County Fire Rescue Chief since 1995, but has wanted to be involved with firefighting and being a paramedic since he can remember wanting to do anything. The television show Emergency showed McRoy he could be a firefighter and a paramedic and after that realization his career path was chosen. Early in his career he would work a shift at the fire department and then work a shift with EMS in Savannah. He then went to DeKalb County, GA where they had a combined Fire/EMS system. After sixteen years away from South Carolina, McRoy came back to Colleton County and when the opportunity arose he went to work with the fire department when the 911 system was in its infancy. He was involved in the addressing and setting up the system. He was there when the County Fire Department, the 16 volunteer fire departments, and the rescue squad became Fire Rescue. McRoy has been there throughout advances in technology, acquiring new equipment, and expanding the areas Fire Rescue could provide help. Throughout it all Barry McRoy has worked hard to do the same thing he has wanted to do since day one: help people. Thank you for being a local hero Chief McRoy!
