9-Year-Old Shot on Buffalo Lane

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left a 9-year-old girl shot. The incident occurred at 5:50 p.m. Sunday afternoon on Buffalo Lane in Walterboro.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s office reported that, witnesses said an argument between adults escalated and resulted in shots being fired outside the home. A bullet entered the residence and struck a juvenile who was inside the home.

Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded to the scene, The mother advised responders that the child was inside the home when the house was shot. She was attempting to transport her to the emergency room by car when she met deputies on Sunshine Ln. The sheriff’s deputies provided care to the child and controlled her external bleeding prior to the arrival of Firefighter-Paramedics. The 9-year-old was shot in the arm and upper torso and is in critical condition. Fire-Rescue transported her to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center. She was transferred to the Flight crew and flown to the children’s trauma center at MUSC. Whole blood was administered enroute. She went to surgery shortly after arrival at MUSC. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

As of press time, the suspect has been identified as Brian Brookes, Jr and is wanted for Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature. Deputies are working to locate the individual and additional charges are expected. Colleton County Sheriff’s office will provide further suspect information and additional updates on the case as they become available.
