Guided Archaeology Tours of Spanish Mount at Edisto Beach State Park to be held

Join archaeologists from the South Carolina Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (SCPRT), the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), and the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) during the December field season at Spanish Mount located at Edisto Beach State Park.

Guided public tours of Spanish Mount will take place at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. from Thursday, Dec. 8 – Friday, Dec. 9, and Monday, Dec. 12 – Thursday, Dec. 15. Each tour is limited to 20 participants, and pre-registration is encouraged.

Tours will be guided by an archaeologist, last approximately one hour, and will include experimental archaeology demonstrations. All tours are free with paid admission to Edisto Beach State Park.

Guests can park in the Live Oak Boat Landing parking area located at the end of Oyster Row Lane. Restroom facilities are located at the end of Oyster Row Lane near the Live Oak Boat Landing parking area and Welcome Center. Following SCDNR signage, you will walk approximately 0.3 miles from the parking area at the end of Oyster Row Lane to the check-in desk.

You may walk up to one mile on your tour as participants visit archaeologists actively excavating. Follow SCDNR signage and check in with an SCDNR Archaeology team member at the green check-in desk located approximately 0.3 miles from the parking area at the end of Oyster Row Lane.

Tour participants of all ages are welcome. Individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian at all times.

Tickets do not need to be presented. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. Visitors can sign up at the green check-in desk upon arrival.

All guided tours will be canceled if inclement weather occurs. Cancellation emails will be sent out to pre-registered tour participants as soon as an inclement weather determination is made by the SCDNR Archaeology team (no later than one hour before your event time).

If the tour is canceled due to inclement weather, you can reschedule on another day. Arrive at the green check-in desk prior to a 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. tour time on another day, and you will be added to the roster for the next available tour.

Guided public tours of Spanish Mount have been financed in part with Federal funds from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, and administered by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
