Goodbye old site, hello to new

Colleton County School District Parent and Family Engagement Program said “farewell” to its old location on 611 Colleton Loop at the Adult Learning Center Annex on Wednesday Dec. 18.
Parents and children steadily arrived all afternoon from 3-5:30 pm for a farewell party, where they received books, bookbags, gifts, snacks, school supplies, stockings, crafts and a visit with Santa.
Tangela Green, director of the program, was gratified by the vendors and members of the community who donated items to distribute to the children and by the parents and children who came to the party.
“The purpose of the event was to provide parents with school supplies to repack their children’s backpacks and to provide books to promote our district’s literacy initiative,” said Green.  Some of the items for the event were donations received from community organizations that were left over from the district’s Back-to-School Bash. Others were purchased through the district’s Title I Parent and Family Engagement program to assist families with repacking our students’ backpacks.  “We also had vendors from different organizations in the community that distributed school supplies and provided resources about their organization to families,” she said.
“I was happy with the turnout,” said Green.  “It was wonderful!”
Almost 200 parents with children attended the event and left loaded down with books and school supplies. They also enjoyed the cupcakes, brownies and popcorn.
The Parent and Family Engagement Department hopes to move into its new facility in January.  They will be housed in the new Colleton County School District building in Forest Hills, which is almost finished with construction and awaiting final inspections.
“When we get into our new facility, we will have an open house,” said Green. “In the meantime, we will continue looking for ways to encourage parental and community support for education in Colleton County.”
