WALTERBORO – Mr. Gene Mitchell Garris, 90, of Walterboro, entered into rest Sunday evening, May 24, 2026, at his home in Walterboro. Mitch, as he was lovingly known by family and friends, was born November 6, 1935, in Williams, South Carolina and was a son of the late Virgil Garris and the late Edna Ramsey Garris. He served our country faithfully in the United States Air Force and worked a long career with the South Carolina Highway Department, where he retired after many years of service as a Civil Engineer over Roads and Bridges. He was a member of Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church in Walterboro, where he was a member of the Believer’s Sunday School Class. Mitch was approaching fifty years of sobriety and was instrumental in helping countless others on their own journey by sharing his story and always willing to listen and pray. He will always be remembered for his love of telling a good joke and encouraging others. Surviving are: his wife, the light and love of his life for sixty-eight years, Mrs. Phoebe Smith Garris; a daughter, Dianne Garris of Walterboro; a son, Timothy Mitchell Garris of Saint George; a brother, Rea Monroe Copeland of the Philippines; five grandchildren, Jessie Garris, Amanda Strickland, Taylor Garris, Morgan Garris and Kelly Mayo (Jamie); and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Gene “Shine” Garris. Funeral services were held 11 o’clock Friday morning, May 29, 2026, at Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church, Walterboro.
