Four Injured in Augusta Highway Accident

An adult driver and three small children were injured in a high speed, single vehicle accident on Highway 61 at Heavy Feather Lane Friday evening May 8th at 10:29 pm,. The southbound passenger car crossed into the northbound lane, where it went down an embankment, struck a driveway culvert, became airborne and collided with a power pole, breaking the pole into several pieces. The car then jumped a driveway, struck a parked car, before striking several small trees approx.15 feet above the ground. The car at some point turned backwards and landed in a pond and filled with water. The occupants were able to escape the car and climbed out of the pond. A bystander placed them in his car and left the scene. 911 operators were able to get the person to stop on Augusta Hwy. near Peirce Road where Colleton County Firefighter-Paramedics could evaluate the patients. The patients were treated at the scene, for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. The children were transported to the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Trauma Center at MUSC, and the driver was transported to the adult Trauma Center at MUSC. Fire-Rescue dispatched dive team to the location, but they were not needed. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
