A dog died in a residential camper fire last week.

Firefighter-paramedics with Colleton County Fire-Rescue were called to a fire on Thursday, March 26th on Dantzler Lane, near Walterboro.

Once on scene, crews discovered that the camper was already fully engulfed in flames. The camper was being used as a residence and was not a recreational vehicle at the time of the fire, according to Barry McRoy, chief of Colleton County Fire-Rescue.

“Crews deployed two hand lines to extinguish the fire, and quickly had it under control,” he said.

The unidentified owner of the camper was on scene when firefighter-paramedics arrived. He was not injured in the blaze. However, a dog that was inside the camper when the fire occurred did die in the fire.

McRoy said firefighters found the dog and then buried the dog for its owner.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, as of press deadline.
