Students of all ages in Colleton County are invited to attend the local community’s first Family Community Empowerment Day.
It will be held on Saturday, May 21st from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Colleton County Middle School.
The day includes face painting for children, free health screenings, music, arts and crafts and food.
There will also be information on available jobs for teens and for parents. County health officials will be giving COVID-19 vaccines to those students and parents who are eligible and who are interested.
Additionally, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is going to offer free fingerprint kits to children. These kits will keep fingerprints of Colleton children on file, which will help local authorities to find children who might go missing.
“We are hoping to have 300 or 350 people attend this event,” said Tanisha Green. She is a parent and family engagement specialist with the Colleton County School District. “This is our first event, so we are hoping for a big turnout,” she said.
"With this event, we aim to increase trust and overall engagement with our families. We want to build and strengthen our relationships with our families and community in a meaningful way so that we can all commit to actively supporting our children's learning and social development."
The event is sponsored by the Colleton County School District, Healthy Blue and the Colleton County Officer Cpl. James Brown, who works with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.
The event is also sponsored by the Lowcountry Food Bank, 93 Jamz and Magic 107.3 R&B. Both of these radio stations will be doing live broadcasts from the event.
Colleton County Middle School is located at 1379 Tuskegee Airmen Drive in Walterboro.
