EyeCare Physicians & Surgeons is moving to an expanded office space at 400 Constance St., sharing the space with Dr. Michael Johnson of Retina Consultants of Charleston. The move brings eye care for the front of the eye and the back of the eye under one roof with expanded testing capability in the new office.

“I am now performing cataract surgery on my second generation of patients here in Walterboro,” said Joseph M. Lally Jr., M.D.

Dr. Alexander Kent who specializes in glaucoma joined the practice 20 years ago.

Lally graduated from Dartmouth College and received his M.S. degree from Georgetown University. After medical school and residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, he completed his fellowship in cataract and cornea surgery at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.

Lally served the eye care needs of the South Carolina Lowcountry in his Charleston and Walterboro offices as well as through his academic position at the Medical University of South Carolina.  His specialty is cataract surgery.

Lally is board chairman of the Colleton Surgery Center, as well as ophthalmology division chief at Roper Hospital and board president of the Roper St. Francis Surgery Center. He has served as president of the Charleston Ophthalmological Society and the South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology. He also served on the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has lectured and volunteered to perform cataract surgery worldwide, most notably in Belize and on Project Orbis, having received a commendation from the people of Lithuania for his work there.

He is actively engaged in resident education at MUSC, where he has been the recipient the Pierre Gautier Jenkins Teaching Award.

His wife, Dr. Michelle Lally is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician at MUSC. They have two children. Their daughter, Margot Lally Martschink, and her husband, Miles, recently moved from South Carolina to Boston where she is a pediatric nurse practitioner at Boston Children’s Hospital.
