Sunday, September 3, 2023 a northbound passenger car left I-95 at a high rate of speed. The car entered the wooded median, struck a tree and overturned, trapping the driver in the wreckage. The car suffered heavy damage. Several passing motorists stopped to assist, but could not access the patient. When Fire-Rescue units arrived, they found the vehicle laying on its passenger side covered with foliage. A Firefighter-Paramedic was able to enter the car through the broken rear window and begin providing patient care. The first responder was able to control the man’s bleeding, while other crew members stabilized the car and began extricating the patient. Firefighters used Holmatro Pentheon Rescue Tools to remove a portion of the roof to free the man. He was extricated with full spinal precautions. Due to his altered level of consciousness and traumatic injuries, a medical helicopter was requested. CARE Flight responded and landed on I-95 north of the accident. The patient was transferred to the Flight Crew and he was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.  For more information visit colletonfire.com.
