A passing motorist who spotted an overturned car in a rural part of Colleton County ultimately saved a man’s life.

On Saturday, April 2nd, an unidentified man driving down Augusta Highway saw a vehicle that was overturned and stopped to see if he could help. That man then notified authorities about the crash, sending help to the victim. “The actions of the motorist may have well saved the man’s life. It is unlikely the vehicle would have been seen until daylight the following day,” said Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy.

Once on scene, firefighters and first responders found an overturned Ford Ecosport, about 150 feet from the highway. The car’s engine was burning. The male driver of the vehicle had been ejected from the vehicle. He was found laying on the ground with “multiple traumatic injuries,” said McRoy.

“The Ecosport had been traveling north on Pierce Road when it failed to stop at the stop sign,” he said. “The vehicle jumped over Augusta Highway, went down an embankment on the other side and collided with a tree causing heavy damage to the small car.”

The man was flown to the trauma center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
