Edisto Island Youth Recreation (EIYR), an all-volunteer organization whose goal is providing vibrant recreation programs through the creation of a recreation complex on Edisto Island, got a real boost this week when SC Senator Chip Campsen confirmed that he had secured $2 million toward completion of a multi-purpose recreation complex on the Island.
The funds, which are a part of the 2023—2024 General Appropriations Act, will be dispersed this fall to Charleston County Parks and Recreation which will in turn participate in the development of the project which includes ball fields, walking trails, a community garden and a gym complete with track and exercise rooms.
Recently, architectural firm LS3P completed site plans and collateral drawings for the gym and the overall layout for the 145 acre project located on Clark Road. Last spring students of Clemson Architecture Center Charleston Studio under the direction of Professor Ray Huff chose the EIYR project for their design assignment. Several workshops later, the students created three, distinctive conceptual designs. From there, LS3P professionals under the direction of Brian Wurst revised and finalized the plans.
Since its formation in 2016, and despite a lack of island facilities, EIYR volunteers have continued to provide numerous recreation opportunities for young people on Edisto and adjacent rural areas including Meggett, Hollywood, and Ravenel. Activities include a complete Little League schedule, track, basketball, cheerleading and gymnastics.
No child is ever charged for anything. Little League fees, insurance, equipment, uniforms and shoes are provided by Edisto Island Youth Recreation through donations and proceeds from special events. Volunteers continue to actively raise funds and secure sponsorships in order to complete this vital project for the Edisto Island community.
