Edisto Beach town council has hired a new police chief, Steve Miano, to fill the vacancy left by former Chief George Brothers.

After six years of service, Brothers recently retired, leaving the position open. Council members hired Miano, a veteran law enforcement officer from Aiken, S.C. who has served in various law enforcement roles for over 15 years.

Miano began his public service career with the Aiken Department of Public Safety (ADPS) while in college as a firefighter and upon graduation became a certified Public Safety Officer. Throughout his tenure at ADPS, he served in a variety of roles that included field training officer, bloodhound tracking team officer, and community service officer.

Miano also served as an investigator assigned as a Task Force Officer with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

In 2013, Moano was appointed to serve as Chief Investigator for the Second Judicial Circuit, which encompasses Aiken, Barnwell, and Bamberg counties. For the last three years he and his family have lived in Ghana where he worked as the Director of Investigation and Law Enforcement Development for the International Justice Mission (IJM). During his time in Ghana he was responsible for leading two teams of Ghanaian investigators that actively identified and rescued victims of human trafficking while ensuring the human traffickers were held responsible for their crimes.

Miano is a 2005 graduate of the University of South Carolina Aiken with a degree in Political Science and a 2017 graduate of the South Carolina Command College at Anderson University where he received his master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration. Miano, his wife, Angel, and son, Steven plan to join the community as full-time residents.
