“Once there was a great forest fire. All the animals fled to the edge of the forest and froze in fear not knowing what to do. They watched as the flames began destroying the beauty of their home. Finally a tiny hummingbird flew to a body of water and took a few drops into its beak. It then flew quickly toward the fire allowing the drops to fall on the roaring flames. Over and over the tiny bird continued. Drop by drop. Back and forth. Again and again.
“The other animals watched from the edge of the forest, and called to the little bird, ‘What are you doing?’ “The hummingbird replied, ‘I am doing what I can.’”
This abbreviated version of “The Hummingbird Story” is a perfect example that demonstrates, whatever you do, especially for the Lord, do what you can as excuses only satisfy those who make them. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV).
God created us to worship, praise, and serve Him, so He is looking for willing workers in the vineyard. If you are not “taking it to the streets” to serve your fellow man in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, then everything you are doing is all for naught. In other words, “You are talking loud and saying nothing!” God is not looking for “talking Christians”; He needs “doing Christians”!
Sometimes, we are guilty of thinking or saying that what little I can do won’t help. If you hear that the football team needs cases of water for the players and you can give one case only, you have helped 24 players. If residents in the nursing home need socks and all you can afford to buy are three pairs, that will be three more than they had. If a nonprofit organization needs volunteers to come in at least three days per week to help serve the meals, but you can go only one-half day, then you have done what you can. God is pleased when we do what we can in His name, from our hearts, not for a show. Always abound in the faith, and never leave home without Him!
