The Colleton County varsity boys basketball team dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in Region VII after losses to James Island High School (62-45) and Beaufort High School (77-65) last week.

Against James Island High School on Tuesday, January 11 at home, the Cougars trailed by 3 heading into the half. After a neck-and-neck third period, James Island pulled ahead with a 17-point surge in the final quarter. The Cougars were led by Deshaun Blocker with 18 points. Other scoring included Brian Hamilton 9, Mykeem Gant 8, Tyshawn Hundley 2, Dashawn Mcneil 2, and Kenny Hand 2.

James Island was led by Ancrum with 14 points and Brayton Scott added 12. Other scoring included A. Scott 8, Smith 5, Levis 4, Mell 4, Reault 3, Rettus 3, and Grant 2.

“James Island is one the deepest teams in the region their depth showed Tuesday,” said Coach Matt Mullins. “We were in the game the whole time but they hit the jumpers and pulled away in the fourth period. We have a bye on Tuesday, so we are looking forward to a solid week of practice as we prepare for May River.”

At home on Friday, January 14 versus Beaufort High School, Mykeem Gant scored 26 points. Blocker added 16 points and Hamilton scored 13 points. Other scoring included McNeil 4 and Hundley 3.

Beaufort was led by James Dennison with 36 points and Michael Dennison added 26 points. Other scoring included Odom 11 and Summer 2.

“We knew the scouting report coming into Beaufort was to keep them off the glass,” said Mullins. “The have three players on their team who almost average a double-double with rebounds. We gave our best effort to try and slow them down on the glass, but they won that battle. A solid offensive game for us, but we did not take the stops we needed.”

Colleton County will host May River High School on Friday, January 21 in Region VII action.
