The Colleton County High School varsity football team defeated Region V-AA Wade Hampton High School 20-13 on Friday Oct. 30 on Senior Night at Cougar Stadium. The Cougars improved to 2-3 overall and remain 1-3 in Region VII-AAAA. The Cougars had 308 total yards including 243 yards rushing.
Colleton County scored first and took a 6-0 lead with 5:20 on the clock in the first quarter. Wade Hampton took the 7-6 lead with :52 left in the first quarter and led 13-6 at the half. With 8:20 on the clock in the third quarter, Colleton County scored on a rushing touchdown and successfully converted two points to take a 20-13 lead, which was the final scoring of the night.
Quarterback Nayrone Holmes was 8-9 for 65 yards in passing with one interception. He rushed 15 times for 121 yards and a touchdown. Trey Magwood rushed 22 times for 122 yards and scored two touchdowns.

On defense, Daryl Green had 7 solo tackles and 6 assists and Chris Hiers had 4 solo tackles and 7 assists.
“Tonight’s win was a great effort on our guys’ part,” said Coach Coby Peeler. “Offensively, I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage all night, and once we were able to get some more touches, we got things rolling.”
“Defensively, I thought our guys really responded in the second half and shut things down,” said Peeler. “Anytime you play an option team, you worry about how many possessions you’re going to get and making the most of them. We only had six total possessions, but our offense was able to score on three of them and run out the clock on another one. Defensively, they did not get a first down in the second half. That is a huge credit to our seniors and the leadership they showed. Now, we just want to get back to work and get better and prepare for Hilton Head.”
Colleton County will host Hilton Head High School on Friday Nov. 6 in a game postponed from early October. The Cougars are currently scheduled to travel to Cane Bay High School on November 13 for a non-conference game.
