Colleton County’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post received special recognition recently at the VFW Department of South Carolina’s annual convention, held June 16-19 in Columbia.

On June 18, Colleton County VFW Post 12102 Commander Marc Jacob was recognized as the Most Outstanding Commander in South Carolina. Jacob was presented with the Samuel U. Roach Award in recognition of his leadership and action. That award led to the Colleton County VFW being named All-State for the fiscal year 2021-2022.

The post not only maintained 100 percent of its membership, but it grew by 2.43 percent under Jacob’s leadership. VFW’s community service excelled throughout Walterboro and Colleton County with youth programs such as Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen Scholarships, and recognition of the cadets of ACE Basin Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.

Catherine Wilson, chaplain for the post, was also recognized and received the J. Francis Carlisle Award for Most Outstanding Chaplain of Year in the VFW Department of South Carolina. According to David Lies, quartermaster and adjutant for Post 12102, Chaplain Wilson provided exemplary service to veterans and their families in the Colleton County area. “She has been there to provide spiritual guidance and support to the veterans and their families during times of need,” reported Lies.

VFW Post 12102 would like to invite all veterans who served in a war, campaign, or expedition of foreign soil or in hostile waters and were honorably discharged to attend meetings and join the post. The post and auxiliary meet on the second Friday of every month at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post 93, 1852 Jefferies Hwy, Walterboro.
