A Colleton County man has been sent to a local trauma center for critical injuries that he received in a horrific weekend car crash.

The unidentified man was driving a pickup truck in the southbound lane of Sidneys Road, near Walterboro, when he over-corrected the vehicle. This move made the vehicle cross over into the northbound lane of Sidneys Road. The vehicle then flipped several times and only came to rest after landing against a tree. The truck landed against the sideways, with the cab pressed against the base of the tree.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3rd, pass Round O Road and near the 6722 portion of Sidneys Road. The general area is known as Sidneys Crossroads.

“The driver received multiple traumatic injuries,” said Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy. Colleton County Fire-Rescue was the emergency agency who responded to the crash. Several firefighter-paramedics with CCFR attended to the crash victim and to cleaning the actual crash site.

According to McRoy, the vehicle was traveling at “a high rate of speed” when the crash occurred.

“Bystanders and several motorists stopped to assist the man, until Colleton County Fire-Rescue units arrived,” he said.

Emergency personnel treated the victim at the crash scene. He was then transported by ambulance to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.

The man’s medical condition is not known, as of press deadline.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating this crash. The driver was the only person in the vehicle when the crash occurred.
