Four former Colleton County Athletes were inducted into Colleton County’s Athletic Hall of Fame October 17th. The ceremony was held on the football field at Colleton County High School before the game. The inductees are Kendrae Hiers, James (Jim) Elbert Ringer, Donald V. Robinson, Sr., and Ronald S. Robinson, Sr.
Kendrae Hiers was honored for his accomplishments on the CCHS Tennis team. His dedication, talent, and commitment to the sport have left a lasting mark on the program and continue to inspire young athletes across the community. Hiers credits Coach Singleton for helping him perfect his tennis game and was glad he ran into him when he did. Before Coach Singleton he used to hit to himself in the backyard and was “self-taught”, but Singleton discovered Kendrae and his talent and wanted him to join the high school tennis team as a 7th grader. Hiers was able to coach over that summer between 7th and 8th grade. From 8th grade to his senior years Kendrae was No. 1 on the team. He continued playing his first two years of college.
Richard Starks, Captain of the Walterboro High School team in 1969, accepted the Hall of Fame Award on behalf of Jim Ringer as graduate of the Walterboro High School Class of 1965. The moment honored Ringer’s legacy and lasting contributions to athletics and the Colleton County community. Starks commented on Ringer’s legendary status as a head coach; one of the most successful head coaches in the state of South Carolina. Starks also commented he was probably the most successful coach to come out of Walterboro High School. Ringer had a 35-year coaching career, 29 of those years as a head coach. He won 227 games in those 29 years. He won two State Championships in football at Rock Hill Division 4A. Outside of football Starks recalls Ringer as being an outstanding student. He was a Furman Scholar at Walterboro High School, Mr. Lair in the yearbook, and senior class president.
Twin brothers Ronald Robinson, Sr. and Donald Robinson, Sr. were inducted into the Colleton County Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of their remarkable contributions to the sport of football. The brothers graduated in the Class of 2006. Donald played linebacker and defensive back, and Ronald played linebacker, defensive back, and tight end. They helped lead the CCHS Cougars to become the Conference VIII Championship Team. Donald and Ronald both posted impressive stats and continued their football careers in college. The brothers greatly appreciated the induction into the Hall of Fame and would like to thank everyone who nominated them for them and rooted for them when they got nominated. Go Cougars!
