The City of Walterboro has once again received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
At the July 6th Walterboro City Council business meeting, Mayor Bill Young congratulated Amy Risher, finance director for the City of Walterboro, for her efforts in the comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2020.
“We are proud of your hard work, and we thank you and congratulate you on what you accomplished,” said Young, who joined Walterboro City Council and members of the audience in a standing ovation for Risher.
According to the Government Finance Officers Association, Risher’s work qualified the city to receive GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
“Attaining this award is a significant accomplishment. We hope that your example will encourage other government officials in their efforts to achieve and maintain an appropriate standard of excellence in financial reporting,” said Michele Mark Levine, director of technical services.
The Government Finance Officers Association is a professional association of approximately 19,000 state, provincial, and local government finance officers in the United States and Canada.
The GFOA established the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (Certificate Program) in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports. These reports are a part of government transparency in spending, according to the GFOA.
Risher and the city received a Certificate of Achievement, an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement (AFRA) and a brass medallion to affix to the current plaque.
