The Colleton County School District Department of Athletics announced a temporary suspension of athletic events through February 8 due to concerns over COVID-19.

In a press release dated January 27, the following statement was issued:

“As a safety measure against the spread of COVID-19, Colleton County School District Athletics is suspending all athletics until February 8, 2021, effective immediately. This is to include all games, conditioning, weightlifting and practices. Currently, we have several student-athletes, coaches and family households who are directly, or indirectly, trying to manage positive COVID cases or symptoms of COVID. As we have always tried to make the best decisions for our athletes, coaches, and community, we have made the decision to postpone athletics temporarily.”

Spring sports will kick-off February 8 according to Wayne Alston, CCSD District Athletic Director. “Originally planned to begin February 1, we are pushing the start of spring sports back to February 8,” said Alston. “This will give everyone an extra week to complete their paperwork completed on PlanetHS including physicals, registration and signing the assumption of risk form. Everything they need to complete is online.”

According to Alston, student-athletes at both the middle school and high school will attend try-outs for spring sports at CCHS on February 8. “There will be one tryout for both our middle school and high school student-athletes,” said Alston. “We are not looking at teams as individual teams, but instead moving toward looking a focus on building the program which means the middle and high school working together to build something strong. This includes boys and girls soccer, softball, baseball, track and field, golf and tennis.”
