“Search For Treasure” author Angela May visited Colleton County Memorial Library to speak to parents, visitors and Friends of the Library on June 17th.
The author was invited to participate in the Library’s Summer Reading Carnival kickoff last Friday.
May addressed the crowd and spoke about the book she co-wrote with New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe, which is the sequel to Monroe’s “The Islanders,” a book for middle schoolers aged 8-12.
According to May, “Search For Treasure” deals with elements of ecology, love and respect for nature and animals. May and Monroe are thrilled to be teaching the importance of conservation to children.
The setting of the book is Dewees Island off the Carolina coast. There is a private residential community there and a nature sanctuary that hosts a huge variety of wildlife such as alligators, shorebirds, sea turtles, otter, deer, raptors and racoons. The book has original illustrations to help children visualize all aspects of the island.
While typical childhood and tween issues are discussed family issues, friendships, and trying to fit in with peers, the book also depicts a military family being forced to deal with a war injury and having to adjust to a prosthesis. Depression and parental relationships are topics also discussed in the story.
Angela May is a former award-winning television news journalist and a media specialist. She’s been a publicist for New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe for more than a decade. “The Islanders” is their first book together.
