Mark down next Tuesday, April 25, as the 48th Annual Rice Festival kicks off with its traditional Taste of Walterboro, which starts 6 p.m., at the Walterboro Wildlife Center, 100 S. Jefferies Blvd.

Cooks and chefs from downtown restaurants, as well as throughout the city and county will be serving up a variety of delights, which makes this a much-desired event to attend.

2022’s event attracted more than 300 people, which pleased organizer MaHallie Martin, who said she believed last year’s event was the opportunity to emerge from the post-COVID pandemic; that people were tired being cooped up indoors and isolated.

“So, they enjoyed coming out this evening,” she said in 2022. “I am really happy with the turnout.”

Also happy with last year’s Taste of Walterboro was another organizer, Bubba Trippe. Originally planned as an outdoor event, it became necessary to move indoors due to a threat of wind and rain. Thankfully, he said, the bad weather held off and guests were able to dine indoors and outdoors.

ABOUT THE RICE FESTIVAL

The Colleton County Rice Festival is an annual event featuring arts and crafts, food, fireworks, music and other entertainment.

It is a celebration of rice, which first arrived in 1685 and helped create enormous wealth for the Lowcountry, since Colleton County was perfect for growing it.

The annual Rice Festival celebrates this heritage and how it has shaped the people and the land.
