A 20-year-old Walterboro man was critically injured in an accidental shooting on London Lane, January 26.

The victim claimed he attempted to take the firearm, which was identified as an AK-47–style pistol (short-barreled rifle), from the child when the child accidentally discharged the weapon, striking the victim in the abdomen. The 2-year-old had accessed the firearm which was loaded and left on a bed in the residence. Colleton County Fire-Rescue personnel responded and treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to a Trauma Center in Charleston. At press time, he is currently listed in serious condition.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Department stated in their Press Release, “This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of firearm safety. We fully support the Second Amendment and the lawful ownership of firearms; however, with that right comes the responsibility to ensure weapons are stored safely and securely, particularly in homes with children. A moment of negligence can result in lifelong consequences. We urge all gun owners to prioritize safety to prevent tragedies like this from occurring.

The Department of Social Services was called to ensure the child’s safety. The incident is still under investigation.
