An adult male suffered multiple traumatic injuries when the pickup truck he was driving left the roadway and overturned Sunday, September 3, 2023 at the intersection of Sunrise Road (SC Hwy 217) and Johnsville Road east of the Town of Smoaks. A caller to 9-1-1 reported the truck weaving. The vehicle entered the ditch, overturned,
and entrapped the man in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived shortly to find the vehicle on its side blocking the intersection. The load of construction materials including thousands of nails and screws had spilled onto the road. The truck was stabilized and the Holmatro Hydraulic Rescue Tools and a Glassmaster tool was used to remove the windshield to extricate the driver. He was treated at the scene, then transported to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. The intersection was closed for several hours until the debris could be cleaned up. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. For more information visit colletonfire.com.
