Get to know #yourColletonFirefighter Dan Barb on #firefighterfriday. Firefighter-Paramedic Barb is assigned to the Station 9 Platoon on “C” Shift. Here is more information on Firefighter-Paramedic Barb:

Dan entered the fire service to follow in his father’s footsteps. Dans’ father faithfully served as a firefighter from 1968 until he medically retired in 1981. Many hours were spent at the fire station with his father, and that is when he came to realize he wanted to be just like his dad. In 1985, when he was old enough, Dan signed up to be a Junior Firefighter in his hometown of Edinburg, Virginia. He also joined the separate Rescue Squad and obtained his EMT certification. After graduating high school in 1988, Dan joined the United States Air Force and trained to be a firefighter. He spent the next six years learning all he could before entering the civilian world. The next chapter of his life was spent with various departments throughout the lowcountry including The Charleston Naval Base, Hanahan Fire, and Berkeley County EMS. He decided to earn his Paramedic certification to open new doors for himself and in 2004, he joined Colleton County Fire-Rescue. This was shortly after Colleton County opted to abolish EMS and reassign the duties to Colleton County Fire-Rescue. Dan spent twelve years at Colleton working his way to the rank of Battalion Chief. In 2006, a new door opened for him, and he was selected to be the director of a neighboring EMS agency. Figuring out just how much he missed the fire service, Dan came back “home” to CCFR in 2020. Dan now gets to occasionally work alongside his son, Garrick, who is assigned to “D”shift at Station 13, and his stepson, Braydon, who is an Explorer firefighter assigned to Station 19.

Dan married his wife, Kathy, in 2021, and the couple have seven children between the ages of four and twenty-one. Over the years, Dan has coached and spent countless hours with his boys on the baseball fields. When he is not working, which isn’t very often, he likes getting outdoors, hunting, fishing, and working on his garden.
