Reading the Bible through with me? Then grab your pen and journal and read 1 Samuel 4-6. The Israelites went up against the Philistines in battle and suffered a humiliating defeat. They regrouped at their camp and began to collectively ponder, “Why did Yahweh let us be defeated today?” I imagine there was heated discussion, perhaps some blame shifting, and even some honest evaluation. Then someone had an idea. “Let’s bring the ark of Yahweh’s covenant from Shiloh.”
NOW, that you’ve read it, do you see what’s missing? They retreated, they evaluated, they questioned, they consulted, and they developed a plan. The only thing missing?? They never got on their faces and into Yahweh’s presence to ask HIM for guidance! THEN, they put their faith in an instrument that represented His Presence rather than putting their faith in God Himself. It was an unmitigated disaster.
When things are not going our way, when we’re uncertain, when we’re desperate, that’s when we need to get alone in God’s presence, seeking Him and His counsel through His word and His Spirit. Our faith is not in a place or an activity, nor any religious routine. Our faith is in the living God of the universe. If you want to get out of a bad situation, get in your prayer closet, open your Bible, ask the Father for His counsel, and do what He says. He wants to show you His way, which leads to peace and sustained joy. Of greater importance, your obedience in trials and triumphs will bring glory to God! That is the true purpose of life. Let this be your prayer:
Lord, what matters in my life mission is not personal strategies, ambitions, or plans. What matters most is seeking You in every circumstance and situation. Above all else, I want to hear You, I want to know You, and I want to live to bring You glory day by day.
