We Have the Lord Our God!

Reading the Bible through with me? Then grab your pen and journal and read 2 Chronicles 30-32. I love the story of the siege of Jerusalem by Sennacherib and the Assyrian army. Righteous King Hezekiah did all the right things, but in his “pre-game speech,” he reminded his people of what really mattered. Look at 32:7-8 -- “Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria or before the large army that is with him, for there are more with us than with him. He has only human strength, but we have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So, the people were encouraged by the words of King Hezekiah.

“More of us than with him?” That was not literally true, but here is the essential truth. “He has only human strength, but we have the Lord our God!” Those words had been validated by Moses and the Egyptians, David and Goliath, Gideon and the Midianites, Daniel and the lions, and Esther and the Persian king.

You get the picture. Often when we find ourselves in a battle setting, our flesh cries out with anger or fear accompanied by schemes for victory. But if we live in submission and obedience to the Lord Jesus, we can abandon our fortunes, reputations, and lives into His hands. Those enemies who come against us have human strength, but we have the Lord our God to help us and fight our battles . . . IF we trust and obey. In these dark times, remember that our God is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Ephesians 3:20
