Walterboro City Council officially proclaimed December 5, 2025, as Arbor Day for the community, continuing Walterboro’s tradition of environmental stewardship and commitment to enhancing public green spaces. The City of Walterboro proudly celebrated Arbor Day on Thursday, December 11, 2025, with the planting of three Longleaf Pine trees at Pinckney Park.

Arbor Day, celebrated across the United States, is a day dedicated to planting and caring for trees. First established in 1872, the holiday serves as a reminder of the importance of trees in maintaining a healthy environment, improving air quality, and supporting local wildlife. For Walterboro, it is an opportunity to further enhance the city’s green spaces and celebrate the role that trees play in the community’s well-being.

To honor Arbor Day, the Walterboro Parks Department, in partnership with the Tree Protection Committee, planted three Longleaf Pine trees at Pinckney Park. The Longleaf Pine, once one of the most abundant trees in the Southeast, is a resilient native species that provides critical habitat for wildlife and plays a vital role in restoring the region’s ecosystems.

Pinckney Park was selected as this year’s planting site to expand shade and greenery in one of Walterboro’s most popular public spaces. The addition of the Longleaf Pines will strengthen the park’s natural landscape, improve biodiversity, and create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

Walterboro’s Arbor Day celebration reflects the city’s ongoing dedication to tree conservation, environmental awareness, and the beautification of public spaces. With the planting of these three trees, Walterboro continues its tradition of investing in the future. Each Arbor Day celebration builds upon the last, ensuring that generations to come will enjoy the beauty, shade, and ecological benefits of healthy, thriving trees across the community.
