I have been married to the same man for 49 years.
Just when you think you know someone after so many
years, you discover that you really don't because as
time goes by, they change.
What do I mean?
He loses the remote control daily. I'm not kidding.
Every. Single. Day.
My husband has a doctorate, but every day we
must have a shape lesson.
He unloads the dishwasher and then opens the
cabinets.
And stares.
Then he starts to stuff dishes on the shelves.
It's a disaster.
I sigh and remind him that oblong or oval dishes
are stacked together and round dishes are stacked together. It's not rocket science. I usually have to pull everything out and restack the dishes.
I'm beginning to think he is pulling my leg and doing his "dumb" routine on purpose.
But then other times I think he is just not thinking.... it's too exhausting at 72 years old.
What do I mean?
The other day I had my phone in my waterproof waist pack. I was watering plants in the yard and kept my phone near me in case of an emergency.
I moved the zippered waist pack around so that it was at my lower back. Soon my husband came up and asked me for something. I told him to get it from my waist pack. He unzipped the pack, removed the item, and walked away.
A few minutes later, I was so hot that I turned the water hose on myself and soaked my head and body. It felt wonderful! But my joy quickly ended when I realized that my phone was in the UNZIPPED waist pack and it was full of water!
He hadn't zipped the pack.
Horrified, I shouted and my husband came running. I jerked the phone out and poured the water out of the waist pack. I was sure my phone was ruined.
My husband took it from me and inspected it. He asked if we had rice to put it in, but I was sure we didn't. He is a diabetic, so rice is no longer a staple grocery item. The phone appeared to be working just fine, but he took it into the house while I dried off.
A few minutes later, I went inside to check on the phone and was shocked by what I found.
My husband had taken my phone and put it in rice. Unfortunately, it was one of those small heat and serve containers where the rice is already cooked and all you have to do is heat it up in the microwave.
Not only was it mushy cooked rice, but it was greasy, seasoned long grained brown rice.
I gasped and jerked the phone out of the container. The bottom of my phone was greasy and needed a cleaning but it was still working.
Poor phone. It had already been through two disasters and survived. I was a lot more shaky.
I just turned and looked at my husband. I was frustrated with him but felt bad as he continued to apologize for not zipping the waist pack and putting the phone in cooked rice. At least the phone was still working so I really couldn't be mad.
The next day he left for church early in the morning; I was coming later. When I walked outside, he had left me his car. The air conditioner was not working in my car so he traded with me. What a great guy!
So the next time he can't figure out how to stack the dishes or he puts my phone in cooked rice, I will overlook it and move on.
It's not everyone who will give up his or her air-conditioning to someone else during a 110 degree heatwave.
