Colleton County Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 12102 held a food drive on 22 November at the Walterboro IGA. Past Post Commander, Bill Proctor, chaired the event and made the arrangements with IGA. The event started with a bang; the staff of the Press and Standard presented the Post with three large boxes of non-perishable items.
The Comrades set up their canopy and started collecting. Through the generosity of the patrons of the Walterboro IGA, the Post was able to collect over 1000 pounds of non-perishable food items and $460 in cash donations. This was enough food to fill a pickup bed to overflowing.
The Wonder Bread deliveryman donated four flats of fresh dinner rolls. The Post was able to make arrangements with the Maple Cane Baptist Church Meals on Wheels, and the dinner rolls will be delivered to the residents of Colleton County in need.
The food and cash were then delivered to the Bethel United Methodist Food Pantry on Monday, 24 November. The Pantry will also receive a matching grant from the National VFW totaling $1,482.
The Comrades of Post 12102 would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the Press and Standard, the management and staff of Walterboro IGA, the Wonder Bread company, and the customers of IGA who made the food drive such a big success.
