C.S. Lewis wrote these words: “The Son of God became a man to enable men to become the sons of God.” We are now in the season of Advent. Advent is defined as “the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.” The Christmas season is, indeed, a celebration of the arrival of the most notable baby in human history. Conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of a virgin girl, this baby was God’s ONLY begotten Son. This amazing, miraculous birth had been in the heart and mind of God since the creation. The very first promise of this advent is found in Genesis 3:15.
Mary was His mother and God was His Father. Yet He had existed long before this birth. Look beyond the nativity scenes and the stories of shepherd, angels, innkeepers, and wise men and read John 1:1-18 for unique perspective on Christmas. John calls the Lord Jesus the Word. The scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, are the written word of God. This newborn baby boy was, would be, and still is the Living Word of God. John tells us that Jesus IS God the Creator of all things. He tells us that it was He Who is the Light and Life. Jesus, God the Son, took upon Himself the cloak of humanity. In Philippians 2, Paul wrote: “…though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to be grasped. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges and took the humble position of a slave, born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, He humbled Himself in obedience to god the Father and died a criminal’s death on the cross.”
John wants everyone to know that this Jesus Who was crucified was and is God the Son! While here on Earth, He was fully human and fully divine. He embraced certain limitations so He could be tempted in every way as we are, yet He never sinned. Read Hebrews 4:15.
He was and is the true King of the world, the King of all creation, and the King of Heaven. After taking the brutal punishment for our sins on the cross, He has now assumed His rightful place at the right hand of God the Father to intercede for those of us who are His children. If you belong to Jesus, He is not only your Savior/Redeemer, but also your King. Remember that this Christmas Season. Tis the season to love Him supremely, trust Him alone for your salvation, serve Him faithfully, and obey His written word.
