Time travelers appeared Saturday, January 11 in the Bedon-Lucas House at 205 Church Street! There were folks from Colonial and Antebellum America, the Roaring Twenties, the Depression Era, the 1950s and 80s, and even a 900 AD Scandinavian. A Supreme Court judge, Queen Elizabeth, and Prince Philip even made an appearance! The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society (CCHAPS) held its 12th Night Celebration, which was themed this year as a Time Travelers’ Ball, for the first time since 2017. The celebration is hosted by the CCHAPS board to show their appreciation to the society’s members for their previous year’s support.
Party goers were treated to a life-size H. G. Wells Time Machine, a Dr. Who TARDIS, and an Outlander standing stone so they could choose their preferred mode of Time Travel. By the end of the evening, all travelers were safely back at the Bedon-Lucas House!
A traditional King’s Cake with a bean baked inside was served. Whoever receives the bean in his or her piece of cake is declared King or Queen for the following year and will determine the theme for the next year’s celebration. Charles Bridges was the lucky bean recipient and was crowned King by CCHAPS President Debi Gilliam. A “Favorite Attire” contest was held. The runner-up was D. J. Tucker in Antebellum attire, and the winner was Patti Lohr as Queen Elizabeth (complete with her Corgi)!
Sponsors for the event were Louie’s Liquors and Food Lion; their support was greatly appreciated. Thanks also goes to the newly elected Executive Committee: President Debi Gilliam, Vice-President Cara Young, Treasurer Rick Hawkins, Secretary Angel Tucker, Historian/Director Sarah Miller, Director Scott Catterton, Director Barrett Ulm, and Director Cindy Warren. Christie Slocum will continue as CCHAPS Colleton Museum Liaison.
