Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 4:00 -6:00 PM at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George. Arrangements for Mrs. Margaret Spell are under the direction of Bryant Funeral Home, St. George.  Margaret Sweatman-Spell was born June 28, 1941 to the late Mr. & Mrs Fitzhugh Lee Sweatman Sr.  She was born at the Old Wolfe House (now Deerfield Plantation) in Byrds.  Shortly after her birth, her parents purchased and restored the Old Carroll House (now the Koger-Murray-Carroll House).   Margaret was the 9th of 10 children and was preceded in death by her parents and all of her brothers and sisters.  Margaret started school at the Oakvilla Country School in the Old St. George District better known to locals as “Cow Tail”.  She went onto school in St. George and graduated St. George High School in 1959, and married Charles Hugo Spell in May 1960.   They had three children: Alice Darlene Spell-Helmey (Ralph), Charles H.S. Spell II, Penny Dean Spell-Knight (Sean) and four grandchildren: William, Samantha, Christopher, Emily Grace. Margaret was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in her yard, which was nothing short of a well-manicured garden like you would find at Middleton Place.  Margaret’s other passion was working in her home, which looked like an interior designer had completed the work.  She was also a talented seamstress who enjoyed making clothes for her children and herself. Margaret was a secretary for years at Carolina Girl’s Wear in St. George, and a Bank Teller for banks in St. George and Walterboro.  She retired from Edisto Farm Credit as a bookkeeper in 2002. Margaret was very blessed that her devoted and loving husband, Charles and daughter, Darlene helped to care for her throughout the end of her life. Her son Chuck recently moved closer to his mother to assist in her care. She was predeceased by Mary S. Taylor, Frances M. “Buster” Sweatman, Ruth S. Geddings, James R. “Bobby” Sweatman, Edna S. Judy, Mildred S. Utsey, Evelyn C. Avant, Fitzhugh L. Sweatman, Jr. and Barbara S. Sundgren. Surviving is her husband, Charles Hugo Spell; son Charles Hugo “Chuck” Spell, II; two daughters, Alice Darlene (Ralph) Helmey and Penny Dean (Sean) Spell-Knight; grandchildren, William Randall Myers, Samantha Allyn (Chris) Helmey-Turgeon, Christopher Michael Knight and Emily Grace Knight; and a number of nieces of nephews. Memorials may be made to Dorchester County Historical Society, 101 Ridge Street, St. George, SC 29477 or Grover United Methodist Church, 1912 Highway 15 South, St. George, SC.
