Serious accident on 17-A

For The Press and Standard

Friday August 4, an adult male was critically injured in a single vehicle, high speed car accident on Cottageville Highway (US Hwy 17-A) near Indian Oaks Lane east of Cottageville. The southbound Ford van which was towing a trailer, left the road-way and struck several trees. The van was heavily damaged in the collision. The cab was crushed and the vehicle overturned. The unrestrained adult male driver was partially ejected and was trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics stabi-lized the van and extricated the driver. He was treated at the scene for his injuries. A medical helicopter was requested and a landing zone established in a field across from the accident, however the helicopter had to abort due to severe thunder-storms in the area. The patient was then transported to the Trauma Center at MUSC with additional personnel onboard to assist with his care. Cottageville Highway was closed for ap-proximately one hour in the area of the accident. A private am-bulance came across the scene and assisted. The South Caro-lina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
