National Police Week took place May 10th through May 16th.
The observance began in 1962 when then President John F. Kennedy signed into law designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day, thereby assigning the observation to the week containing May 15 every year. “National Police Week is a time of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those who continue to serve. Its origins trace back more than 60 years and have grown into one of the most significant annual observances by law enforcement,” as defined by policeweek.org.
The Walterboro Police Department thanked the community for showing their support. “One of the best parts of Police Week has been seeing the support from our local businesses and community partners. Their kindness and generosity have helped make this week special for our officers and staff. A special shoutout to Papa John’s, Shorty’s Smokin’ Butts, and McDonald’s for helping make this week one to remember. We’re thankful for the continued support and community spirit shown throughout Police Week.”
