An adult male was critically injured when he drove his moped into the path of an east bound Ford Explorer Friday afternoon June 12th. The accident occurred at the intersection of Hampton Street and Hickory Street. The Explorer was traveling west on Hampton Street when the moped pulled out from Hickory Street striking the Explorer head-on. The small moped received extensive damage and ejected the driver who landed unconscious in the roadway. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered multiple traumatic injuries and a head injury. The two occupants of the Explorer were not injured. The 1800 block of Hampton Street was blocked for two hours while the Highway Patrol investigated the crash. Sheriff’s Deputies rerouted traffic. Firefighter-Paramedics quickly treated the man at the scene and requested the CARE Flight medical helicopter. The patient was placed into Fire-Rescue Medic 19 and driven emergent to the CARE Flight base. The patient was transferred to the Flight Crew, then flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston.
