Message to the community from Interim Superintendent Jessica Williams

Greetings Colleton County Community.

I sincerely hope this message finds you and your loved ones in good health and positive spirits! The New Year has presented new opportunities and challenges that our community must navigate together for the betterment of all, especially for the benefit of our most precious jewels, our beloved children.

As I reflect on the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year, I am reminded of a quote by C.S. Lewis that states “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending!” In accordance with this quote, I am asking the community to continue partnering with the school district to assist us in meeting our goals and objectives. The mission of the Colleton County School District is to prepare every child to graduate with a 21st century education to be globally competitive for their chosen college and/or career path. The vision of the district is to be a world-class school system that ensures all students achieve at high levels.

Although our district has established many specific goals, action steps, and strategies that are outlined in our 5-year Strategic Plan to realize our mission and vision, we simply cannot do it alone. It truly takes a village! We ask for your support and partnership as we work to meet the following immediate goals:

Goal 1: Ensuring the safety and security of all staff and students: All schools in the Colleton County School District are equipped with security devices and follow safety protocols. One of the primary concerns on the local, state and nation front is the possibility of a weapon on school grounds. To further prevent weapons from entering our district, we have purchased and installed Weapons Detection Systems at Colleton County Middle School and Colleton County High School. A video of how this system works is posted on the district’s website.

Goal 2: Increasing student’s academic success by meeting the goals and objectives of each school’s Turn Around Plans which include providing intensive interventions and acceleration, providing robust stakeholder engagement and increasing the climate and culture of each school We are committed to increasing EVERY school’s State Report Card Ratings. To this end, we are asking that you consider partnering with us to serve as a volunteer in mentoring a student through our Lunch Buddies Program, tutoring a student in our After School Programs, assisting a teacher with various tasks, or offering whatever assistance you are able to provide.

Goal 3: Attracting and retaining highly qualified teachers and staff committed to engaging our students in robust learning opportunities. Please partner with us by referring teachers you know who are willing to join our district.

As we reach the midpoint of the school year, it is critical that we continue supporting one another as we push towards the prize! The ultimate prize will come in the form of the rewards that result from meeting the vision, mission, and goals of our district. Remember, we are Colleton; we are focused; we are forward thinking; we are purpose driven!

Please partner with us to keep the momentum going to ensure our ending is great by starting this semester strong!

With Sincere Gratitude,

Jessica F. Williams
