Log Truck Accidents Kills One

One person died and two others were critically injured in an accident involving a log truck. The accident occurred at Whetstones Crossroads in Bamberg County, October 1. The location is about a half mile from the Colleton County line at the intersection of Hwy 21 and Hwy 61. A northbound loaded log truck on Hwy 21 collided with a passenger car who was traveling on SC Hwy 61. The log truck overturned, spilling its load of logs and, then slid into a convenience store which was undergoing renovations. A worker operating a skid steer at the store was struck by the log truck, ejecting the operator. The operator sadly died at the scene. Thorne Ambulance Service from Bamberg County treated the truck driver and requested a medical helicopter. Bamberg County units also requested mutual aid from Colleton County. The Highway was blocked by the wreckage and logs in the highway. Several Colleton Fire-Rescue units responded to assist and treated the female driver of the car and transported her to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. A Meducare helicopter from Orangeburg responded to the scene and flew the truck driver to a Trauma Center in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
