Here are my comments on the NIL problems facing college sports:
Name, Image, and Likeness also known as (NIL)
The expansion of NIL opportunities has enabled student-athletes to benefit from their talent. This development is a good thing. Unfortunately, shady agents, bad actors, and a patchwork of state laws threaten to undermine the progress student-athletes have made. While millions of Americans are devoting time and money to support their college teams, behind the highlight reels and packed stands, college athletics stands at a crossroads.
Stories of athletes leaving their teams over NIL related problems and bad actors getting involved, it is clear the current path is not sustainable. Switching college teams for more money will turn college sports into a junior professional league. Loyal fans will become frustrated over the lack of loyalty. Large increase in players switching teams will confuse fans. Big money colleges and conferences will soon outbid smaller less funded colleges for top talented players and reduce competition.
I, for one, hope that Congress, the NCAA, universities, and conferences will quickly adapt and solve these problems before fatal damage is done. If money replaces old fashioned loyalty as the motivator for players and coaches, you can count me out.
