The Colleton County Animal Shelter Needs You! Part 2

Our shelter’s non-profit partner, Friends of Colleton County Animal Shelter (FoCCAS), provides financial and volunteer support by sponsoring events, such as Walk and Wag (October) and PAWS (March) to help fund spay and neuter, microchip services, special and emergency surgeries, purchase and distribute pet food and supplies, all at no cost to our residents. This helps reduce the financial burden of the shelter ----and our tax payers!!

Social media is used to reunite pets with owners and expand adoption opportunities. It is heartbreaking to see animals come in by the dozens every week – some abandoned, found tied up, or with litters of puppies and kittens, some surrendered by owners, some found and brought in. Keeping our Animal Control Officers safe is also a challenge. They are on the road continually responding to calls regarding injured, unrestrained, neglected or abandoned animals.

Dedicated shelter staff and volunteers work HARD at our outdated facility to care for the animals with many required daily duties: feeding, walking, cleaning, laundry, bathing, medical treatments, managing surrenders, preparing animals for adoption with socializing, spaying and neutering, transporting animals to other facilities for medical care and adoption events, maintaining records, handling reports of lost animals and complaints about nuisance animal situations, conducting educational programs …the list goes on. Their work would be reduced immensely if more citizens would take responsibility for our 4–legged friends.

A network of veterinarians and other shelters help find homes for our animals. We work with several area and out-of- state rescue operations that do not have pet overpopulation problems -- thanks to strict spay and neuter laws! Support from many communities and organizations is much appreciated.

Yes, we are scheduled to have a new shelter in the near future, but hundreds of animals need care in the meantime AND after the new facility is completed. Everyone can help NOW by volunteering at our shelter, taking care of their own animals, and/or fostering and adopting.

Please contact the shelter at 843-893-2651 or ccaec@colletoncounty.org if you have lost a pet or can help in any way. Volunteers are always welcome!

Thank you.
