The community gathered Thursday, October 8 at the historic Hubster House on East Washington Street in Walterboro to celebrate the guardians of our local heritage at the annual Preservation Awards Ceremony hosted by the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society. Since 1992, the Society has held the ceremony in an effort to thank and recognize outstanding individuals and businesses dedicated to protecting and restoring the historic architecture and cultural landmarks that define the Lowcountry.

The Preservation Awards Committee presented four well-deserved awards Thursday night to sites we are sure would thank their homeowners if their walls could talk! The recipients were:

The Simon Verdier Award to D. J. and Angel Tucker for the Pearcy – Tucker House in Walterboro

The Colleton Rural Property Award to Chad Husselbee for the Padgett – Cummings –Husselbee House in Ruffin, SC

The Sir John Colleton Award to Chip and Betsy Hall for the White Hall Post Office in Green Pond, SC

The Walterboro Key Historic Property Award to Pete and Jessica Lommen for the Hubster House in Walterboro

Congratulations to these recipients for their dedication to the upkeep of our historic sites. The Preservation Awards Ceremony serves as a concrete example of CCHAPS mission: to promote, nurture, support, and protect the historical and cultural heritage of Walterboro, Colleton County, and its environs through programs of awareness, education, and preservation. Thanks to Enterprise Bank of South Carolina for sponsoring the event.

CCHAPS has two upcoming events. The Holiday Tour of Historic Homes will be held Saturday, December 12, 12:00 noon to 4:00, starting at the Little Library.
