Humility That Attracts Grace

In the Book of James, we are given a sobering and powerful truth about our relationship with God: “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (4:6, ESV). These words remind us that humility is not optional for the believer; it is required! Pride creates distance between us and God, while humility draws us closer to Him.

Pride is dangerous because it slyly convinces us that we are self-sufficient. It tells us we do not need correction, guidance, or even God Himself. Evil always has a way of sneaking itself in on us if we are not careful! Pride elevates self above submission and turns confidence into arrogance. Pride does not merely stumble, but it collapses. It blinds us to our weaknesses and deafens us to God’s voice.

Humility, on the other hand, positions the believer to receive grace. Grace is not earned; it is given, and God chooses to give it freely to those who recognize their need for Him. James goes on to say, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (4:10, KJV). Notice the order (something we all need to do): we humble ourselves first, and then God does the lifting! Pride tries to elevate itself; however, humility waits on God’s timing and power. Hallelujah!

True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. It is acknowledging that every good thing in our lives flows from God. Jesus Himself modeled this kind of humility. Though He was fully God, He humbled Himself in obedience. Scripture tells us, “He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8, NKJV). If Christ, the Son of God, chose the path of humility, how can we justify walking in pride? There is no justification!

Only in Christ do we find true humility. Apart from Him, humility becomes performance or false modesty. In Christ, humility is genuine surrender, laying down our will and trusting God’s wisdom over our own. When we humble ourselves before Him, God draws near, covers us with grace, and strengthens us for every challenge we face. Absolutely! Pride pushes God away, but humility invites Him in. Please take some time, and ponder this question for thought: In your daily walk with God, are you positioning yourself to receive His grace, or are you resisting it through pride? Always abound in the faith, and never leave home without Him!
