Honoring Luther Smith

For the Press & Standard

Class of ‘69,

Many of you have heard that Friday night, January 27, at Greenwood High School (GHS) at around 7 p.m. (between the girls’ basketball game beginning at 6 p.m. and the boys’ basketball game following the ceremonies) they plan to recognize and honor Luther Smith.

The email below from Jim Martin ask our class to join many others who will attend the event:

For those who might not know or remember Luther, he came to GHS as a 10th grader in the fall of 1966. He officially became the first black at GHS in any sport. Luther proved to be a tremendous addition to the team all three years until his graduation in 1969. Not only a good athlete but a really great guy as well. I hope you will join many from our class to recognize Luther. If you are unable to attend, send him a letter congratulating him. I am sure he will appreciate an email from our classmates. The last email address I have for him is: inssmith51@gmail.com. It is always so good to hear when one of our classmates is recognized for their athletic abilities, scholastic and professional achievements, or for some recognition of success in life further embracing the many talents and successes of the great “Class of 1969.” - David
