Holiday traffic causes collision with fire on I-95

Posted

Two accidents involving four vehicles blocked the southbound lanes of I-95 at the 42-mile marker, Saturday morning December 23. Holiday traffic was heavy, with bumper to bumper traffic when the vehicles collided. One car caught fire, but all occupants were able to safely exit the vehicle. Engine 13 arrived to find the passenger car fully involved. Firefighter-Paramedics deployed one handline to extinguish the flames. Once the fire was knocked down, crews routed traffic to the breakdown lane in an effort to get the southbound traffic moving. No one was seriously injured and the occupants denied ambulance transport to the hospital. Two lanes were blocked for 45 minutes with holiday traffic backing up seven miles. Battalion 1 used a chain to remove the burned car from the roadway and reopen the two lanes. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the MVC.

Engine 1, Engine 13, Medic 13, Battalion 1 and Car 111 responded. Captain Jack Wimberly served as Incident Commander.
