Graduates, Your Next Chapter: Walk with Faith, Wisdom, and Gratitude

Posted

Key Scripture: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV).

To the 2026 graduates of Colleton County, “Congratulations”! You have reached a milestone that did not come overnight. This moment is the result of years of studying, showing up, pressing through, growing up, and sometimes getting up early when your bed was begging you to stay just five more minutes! Consequently, you kept the fire of determination burning!

Graduation is not the end of the road. It is the opening of a new chapter. Whether you are heading to college, the military, the workforce, technical school, entrepreneurship, or still praying for clear direction, remember this: God knows the path even when you do not. That is why Proverbs reminds us to trust Him with all our hearts.

As you step into your next chapter, please take these valuable “nuggets” of wisdom and advice with you:

First, keep God first. Your gifts may open doors, but your faith will help you stand when life becomes difficult. Do not wait until trouble comes to pray. Build your relationship with God Now.

Second, choose your circle wisely. Everybody who claps for you is not always committed to you. Surround yourself with people who challenge, encourage, and correct you, and help you become better.

Third, work hard and stay humble. Talent is wonderful, but discipline will carry you farther. Do not expect success without sacrifice. Show up on time, keep your word, and give your best, even when nobody is watching. One thing that my mother and maternal grandmother taught me that I will never forget, and I always taught this to my own children and students: “Manners will take you much farther than money ever will!”

Fourth, learn from failure without becoming a failure. You may not pass every test in life the first time. You may stumble. You may have to start again, but remember that falling does not mean you are finished. Get up, learn the lesson, and keep it moving!

Fifth, never forget to say, “Thank you!” Be appreciative of your parents, grandparents, guardians, siblings, and family members who sacrificed for you. Thank your teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, coaches, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, secretaries, nurses, and other staff members. Thank the mentors, church members, neighbors, and community supporters who helped you get to this chapter.

Here is a final piece of advice for life: Do not let the world make you forget who you are and Whose you are! Trends will change. Friends and plans may change. However, God’s purpose for your life still stands. Graduates, walk boldly, live wisely, love deeply, serve humbly, and trust God completely. Your next chapter is waiting. Go write it well. Always abound in the faith, and never leave home without Him!
