The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him
Nahum 1:7
We make an effort around Thanksgiving to be more aware of our blessings, but I wonder if we are truly aware of where these blessings come from. On award shows we see people thank God in that moment when they win an award, yet live lives oblivious of God’s goodness. Are we any different? Here are a few things we need to remember about God’s goodness.
God’s nature is goodness. God is always good in whatever He chooses to do. God is good, even when life doesn’t feel good. Part of believing in God is choosing to believe that God is good when you are experiencing difficult circumstances. It is impossible for God to be anything other than good.
We don’t always see God’s goodness as good. Remember when you were a small child and you would get upset with your parents when they didn’t give you what you wanted? We think of God’s goodness as Him giving us what we want, when we wat it. Because He doesn’t do this, we may think that God is not good. God is determined to do everything for our best, which means that God values our character over our comfort. God will let you go through difficult times to mature your faith and trust in Him.
God’s goodness doesn’t mean that He will not punish evil. God’s goodness is not the same as your grandmother’s goodness. In fact, God’s goodness insists that He punish evil as an expression of His love for what is right and good. Even in God’s wrath, He is good.
Would you ask the Holy Spirit to make you more aware of God’s goodness in your life?
